From Taiwan, Baihao means “white hair” or “white tip” and is made from tender young tea buds. This oolong is also sometimes called “Dong Fang Mei Ren,” or also “Oriental Beauty.” Yields an incredibly floral aroma and a beautiful orange-red color.
Between April and June, these tea plants are visited by tiny green leaf hoppers that eat the edges of the tea leaves. When this occurs, the leaf releases an enzyme that causes Baihao’s characteristic honey-sweet flavor notes. Producers of this type of tea work hard to avoid pesticides in order to make sure the leaf hopper bugs return each year.
