Bon Appétit

Bon Appetit

Bon Appétit, January 1997

For a truly unique experience, there is Teaism. This is the first teahouse in Washington, D.C., and it offers around 50 different teas to choose from. It's a small, simple and beautiful retreat that actually provides a serene alternative to the out-of-control coffee scene.

Owners Michelle Brown and Linda Orr hired chef Arpad Lengyel to create a menu of what Brown calls "affordable, top-quality food to go with our loose-leaf tea selections." Lengyel has succeeded admirably, offering Japanese bento boxes, tandoori kebabs and sandwiches with Asian overtones (there's even a hamburger with ginger and jalapeño). Be advised: The place is self-service. Be happy: Lunch checks average right around ten dollars, and dinner prices are only slightly higher.
